One of the most valuable assets your business has is your list of prospects and previous clients. Of course, this list is only useful if the folks on it actually want to hear from you.

Of all the different whiz bang tools out there for reaching out to customers, email is still the reigning champ. The average email open rate is 32%.

With a smart approach to list maintenance, you can not only grow your list, but get your open rate and engagement engagement higher than the average. With that in mind, here are four effective ways to get high quality subscribers onto your list. clients.

Make them an offer they can’t refuse…

We talk about lead magnets a lot around here. That’s because they have a huge impact on how many new subscribers you add to your list and what type of subscribers they are.

Your offer needs has to be appealing to be effective, but you want to make sure it’s appealing to the right people. As effective as they are, I personally am not a fan of coupons. It’s one step above Groupon and I do so hate giving money away.

I prefer any type of offer that tells you something about your potential customer. When I’m coaching or working with my customers, I ask them to look for something I call “the emotional why.” People make decisions with emotion, so if you can find an emotional connection that your prospects can latch onto, you’ll get a higher quality of subscriber and one that you can surely take care of.

If you want to get more subscribers, focus on “the why behind the what” and give your target audience what they really want.

Make the Process Smooth Like Butter

When it comes to your opt-in form, there are two schools of thought. Make it simple or get as much information as you can.

Both have their place. For example, if you primarily sell high-end B2B services, it’s in your best interest to make sure you’re in touch with the right person. It would be pretty annoying to spend time and resources, just to find out the person you’re working with is in the wrong department. In this case a longer opt-in form makes perfect sense.

If, on the other hand, you’re primarily a B2C business, you want to go simple. One line. Just the email address. Any more is just plain greedy and a bit of a turn off for a lot of potential subscribers. Keep it simple and you’ll grow your list faster. Anything you can do to remove the friction from signing up for your list increases your opportunities to grow you list of subscribers.

Remember, the exit is only one click away. Make it easy for your prospects to stick around and see what you have to offer.

Sharing is Caring

Let’s assume you have the right intent and you’re creating helpful information for your subscribers. If you find that you have a piece of information that is particularly helpful, it’s a good idea to ask them to pass it along. Ask them to send it to friends and family or any colleagues that would find it useful.

You’ll need to be careful though. First t you’ll need to include a way for people to subscribe from within the email. Doesn’t do you much good to ask subscribers to pass it along if there’s no way for new subscribers to get on board.

Also, it’s definitely a smart move to include instructions in the email message to prevent accidental unsubscribes. That would be most unfortunate. Just be certain to add these details prominently in the email message and you should be fine.

Give Your Subscribers options

No one likes the feeling of drinking from the fire hose. That’s what it can feel like if you blow up your subscribers inbox with a data dump several days a week.

Some may welcome all of the helpful information you’re sending. However, you may find that quite a few others are going to get annoyed at the volume of emails they’re getting from you.

The idea of building a list is to keep it growing. Rampant unsubscribes, defeat the purpose. An easy way to avoid this and give your subscribers value at the frequency they want is to offer different subscription levels. Your autoresponder software will have several options for providing subscribers with a different frequency. The value of your list in in keeping your subscribers responsive. If they unsubscribe or just filter your emails into their SPAM folder, you’ll miss a huge opportunity.

Building and maintaining a list is one of the most important things you can do for your business. Just remember, your list is made up of people. Take the time to treat them right and tailor your efforts to what they need and you’ll find yourself with a great list that can sustain your business.
